Lighting styles: A more comprehensive overview of different light setups within a studio, and some you can use at home. Guest trainer John Duder
Course overview:
John is an experienced photographer and trainer who will go through various lighting set ups with our amazing model Kym. This course is suitable for anyone who wants to extend their knowledge on lighting set ups.
Course contents includes:
Setup 1: Natural light in the studio environment – this places emphasis on creative use of wide apertures and careful composition to show the model in context, without cluttering the frame.
Setup 2: High-key art nude on the white backdrop – giving images that are ideal for conversion to monochrome.
Setup 3: Strong sidelight – allowing a mysterious and dramatic approach to art nudes, and gives the drama that works so well with Kym’s body art.
Setup 4: IKEA LED lamps – with the advent of pretty LED lamps to fit standard light sockets, there’s a vogue for using them as a major feature in creative images, combined with flash. If you use these in combination with flash, the problem is that there are big differences in brightness and colour of such lamps and studio flash units or speedlights!
Setup 5: low-key art nudes with coloured LED floodlights – I’ve shied away from using gels for many years, and only recently tried them out properly. I hope that you’ll enjoy using them the way I have set them up, to give contrasting colours on different sides of the model. LED flood lights have a wider range of colours to offer, and are cheap to buy.
Setup 6: Toplight - this gives a moody and highly directional light for a dramatic low-key effect using a standard reflector with a honeycomb grid.

“My first time in a studio and what an amazing experience it was! I have been photographing for 3 months. Neil is absolutely superb. Nothing was too much for him! He helped me with all the lighting set ups, explained everything thoroughly, helped me with inspiration. I couldn’t have asked for me. Offered refreshments. He is very welcoming, polite, respectful, kind. If anyone is considering hiring this studio then do it, you will not be disappointed. I can’t wait to come back again. Thankyou again for everything.”
